About

Project Goal And Objectives

The goal of the Creating Sustainable Youth MSMEs Through Urban Farming project is to create jobs and provide incomes for African youth who are attracted to urban agriculture but are not able to get jobs, capital, or credit to establish or operate their agribusinesses. 

Target Beneficiaries

  •  360 direct unemployed graduate youth
  • 360 other youth to be directly employed as farm workers and assistants.
  • 1,800 youth receiving indirect jobs through employment multiplier of 2.5 (720 direct jobs x 2.5).
  •  Over 18,000 indirect participants (traders, artisans, etc.) in the value chain (250 participants per cluster enterprise).
  • 1,440 agro-dealers and input suppliers impacted by trade
  • 36,000 smallholder farmers living adjacent to the enterprises through extension outreach.
  •  Financial institutions through increased bankable pipelines and lending volume of portfolios.
  • Other agricultural value chain actors including government ministries, industries, and offtakers.

Project Communication ​

Strategy And Donor Visibility ​

The initiative will facilitate and leverage on the experience of the incubation centres on knowledge management to promote the activities of the project using the development
communication approach model. It will utilize modern information and communication technology (ICT) tools to give visibility and credit of the project for the benefit of donors,
implementers, and beneficiaries.

Services Brochure

Within the one month, the Consortium will design a brochure specific to the FAPA activity, describing services and modalities of the Project. This brochure will be disseminated to all stakeholders involved in the project and will include the FAPA and Bank logos.

Communications with AfDB FAPA Secretariat:

APDC will maintain regular communication with the FAPA Secretariat through AHAI Department.

Communication with stakeholders

The Project will publish a semi-annual newsletter aimed at informing the public (including private sector and government collaborators, implementing partners, and beneficiaries). The purpose will be to build visibility around urban farming.

Technical reports and Workshop Proceedings

These will be published to demonstrate to potential private sector investors and government policy makers that youth are the future agripreneurs based on their success stories.

Exchange and Tours

Consortium will provide regular opportunities for youth interns and agripreneurs to meet, blend and interact with other youth from the three countries for exchange of knowledge and skills, and will participate at the AfDB organized annual Africa Youth Agripreneurship Forum (AYAF).

Murhula Mulemaza Elie

Is a young horticultural farmer whose field is located in Kabare (Lwiro), growing cassava, beans and maize. He rents a 4-hectare space where all his crops are installed. Starting out with broiler chicken and pig farming, in 2021 he was forced to stop his activities having been robbed by thieves and him.

Succes stories

  • Legalization of the business after the training and is awaiting national identification,
  • Creation of employment for casual work at least 15 workers according to needs,
  • Schooling of children through this activity,
  • Payment of rent,
  • Payment of medical care Meet the primary needs of the household
  • Process of an agricultural loan at Coopec Cahi,
  • Opening of a bank account for the company.
Aganze Bahizire Alain

A young farmer in aquaculture where he concentrates on the processing of fresh fish into salted and smoked fish. His business is located in Bukavu in the Saio district, more precisely his activity is done from home.

Succes stories

  • Legalization of the company during the training,
  • Job creation (3 permanent people within the company),
  • The activity meets its primary needs (purchase of credits, transport, etc.)
  • Intervenes in the household.

Financial Management

Project FM will be under the responsibility of the Department of Finance and Administration within the EA and done by the Finance and Administration Manager  as a member of the PMU under the oversight of the Managing Director who is familiar with Bank rules and procedures.
